A (longer than intended) post about a spontaneous, short trip I made to Orlando, including Disney World and Kennedy Space Center.
OK, so, I went to the Oshkosh Airventure airshow for the first time in probably 35 years. I only have fuzzy memories of some of that previous outing, but it wouldn’t have mattered, because the scale of this event has grown to an unbelievable level and those old memories wouldn’t have prepared me for it all, anyway.
I tagged along with a colleage and some of his family, making the rare exception to allow myself to go camping. We took off on the Thursday morning of the week, getting there and setting up camp in time to catch the airshow that afternoon. We were there through Sunday, doing a bunch of stuff from Wednesday to Saturday, including the awesome night show on Saturday night. Then we packed up camp and went to the EAA Museum on Sunday and then drove home.
Despite putting on sunscreen, I still managed to get some sunburn. It was very hot for most of the daylight hours while we were there, minus about 45 minutes of rain on Wednesday, shortly after the afternoon airshow finished up (and getting a bit of water into the tent, of course). It was exhausting, overwhelming, very cool and lots of fun. It’s such a huge event and it’s hard to take it all in. It’s the biggest airhshow in the world, with the control tower becoming the busiest in the world for that week. It’s hard to convey just how big it all is. I’m glad I returned after so many years and got to experience a more current instance.
Videos
Let’s kick things off with a kinda music video edit I put together. If you wanna check out an alternate audio version of this vid with only the music, you can see that here. All videos on this page are in full 4K and look best viewed full screen.
Up next is the full Saturday night show, featuring fireworks, drones, lasers, high explosives, a Goodyear blimp and a plane shooting fireworks as it flies around the fun. This is mostly from my DJI Pocket 2 with some bits edited in from my Pixel 8 Pro. I love fireworks shows and go to quite a few, and this was quite possibly the coolest show I’ve seen.
