The Munificent Musings Of A Maniacal Mammal

The concert took place on February 10, 2009, which would have been the 80th birthday of the late, great Jerry Goldsmith, who died approximately 5 years earlier in 2004.

It was performed by the Tenerife Film Orchestra & Choir, conducted by Mark Snow & Diego Navarro.

This was released to DVD as a combo limited edition CD/DVD set back in 2011. In the years since, I’ve been messing with trying to visually clean up the poorly encoded DVD. I’d never managed to have particularly good results until digging into some highly complicated de-interlacing and sharpening techniques. I also upscaled it to 720p as part of the process. There’s still a good amount of terrible aliasing during the concert performance sections (particularly on the boom arm camera shots), but this is about as good as I’m gonna get this to look, at least for now. Perhaps some day in the future some AI encoding tricks can do a bit better. But this is finally a decent, watchable encode.
