I think they should put pies on the fronts of trains, so that when they hit something it's at least a little bit funny.

Ponderings For 2008-05-23

  • Surprising praise goes to Sony Home Entertainment for their DVD release this week of Square Pegs. As a vaguely remembered show from the early 80’s (one of the first to have that TRUE 80’s feel), it’s one of those surprises to see get a DVD release. I remember seeing a handful of episodes at some point many years ago and liking it. I just picked up a copy of the set today, which lists one basic special feature, “Weemawee Yearbook Memories (Interviews with the Cast and Crew).” In the age of everything having basic special features, I figured this was some brief, fluffy, basic set of interview clips. I was shocked to discover that these are some extensive interviews with all the cast. And they’re great, nostalgic interviews. There’s gotta be at least an hour and a half of them in total, spread across the three discs. Even Sarah Jessica Parker has a solid 15 minutes of interview, fondly remembering her experience shooting the series. The interviews reminded me of the wonderful interviews found on the (new version) My So-Called Life DVD set. Except these memories of shooting Square Pegs are twice as old as having shot My So-Called Life. Frankly, I always like interviews and commentaries from somewhat aged productions, because the people involved feel a little bit more free to give their real memories and opinions when they have distanced themselves from the experience (and all the PR blitz that goes with it). And also, Sony did a bang up job on the quality of the episode transfers in this release. This series has never looked this good - surely not when it originally aired. And the running times make it quite clear that these are the original aired cuts, not some butchered syndicated edits. Then again, watching these discs makes me all the more annoyed that Sony is STILL sitting on Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, which is currently my #1 most desired TV on DVD release. The Square Pegs set may not be a staggering special edition mega-production, but it’s got the kind of quality that would thrill me to see given to Parker Lewis. Please, Sony? PRETTY PLEASE? :-(
  • Incidentally, I guess this is an evening for me to slip into totally 80’s mode. As I sit here typing about Square Pegs, a show from 1982-1983, I have playing the brand new CD release of Bruce Broughton’s score to 1984’s “Ice Pirates” which was waiting for me in my mailbox when I got home.
  • GASP! What’s this? The Pushing Daisies season 1 release is not only going to be on DVD, but on Blu-Ray as well? And at a reasonable price, no less? Woo hoo!
  • Gosh, it’s amazing the level of quality that exists on visual effects animatics these days, and for TV no less. Then again, this is Battlestar we’re talking about - a show with better visual effects than most any feature film.
  • An amusing combination of stories
  • Here’s a phrase I would have never anticipated myself uttering: That’s one awesome table
  • Fun Rubik’s Cube ads
  • Would you pick up this hitchhiker? Indeed…

Ponderings For 2008-01-04

  • Holy cow. What a day for multimedia (well, within 24 hours or so of each other). First, Sony/BMG are working at dropping DRM from their online music offerings. That makes them the last of the major labels to do so.
  • But that’s not the big news. Warner Bros has declared their exclusive allegiance to Blu-Ray. While most people following this brutal format war expected Warner to do this eventually, the speed at which they did it was surprising. Not to mention the timing. This announcement comes just before the start of the weekend for CES. It apparently caught the HD-DVD camp completely off guard, causing them to cancel their primary shindig. So far, Warners is swearing that this was not the result of any payoff from the BDA camp, a fact that I would believe. More surprising, their listed justifications actually make business sense, rather than the usual PR spin most of the companies try to put on these kinds of maneuvers. So, it looks like the idiotic high def format war is finally in a tailspin. With some 70% of exclusive studio support, the HD-DVD camp doesn’t stand a whelk’s chance in a supernova.
  • Congratulations to Mars rover Spirit, for four years on the job. Boy, Spirit and Opportunity have been quite the little troopers. Spirit is a bit worse for wear, but the little guy just refuses to give up. In a few weeks, Opportunity will celebrate its fourth year, still going strong.
  • How about a man who amazingly survives a 47 story fall?
  • So, Asus is splitting into 3 companies. Interesting.
  • And to end today’s post on a serious note, here’s a blog posting you won’t see every day (thank goodness). Definitely worth the read.

Ponderings For 2007-10-04

  • Today was the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik 1. Hurrah!
  • Ooooh, a new Sony Bravia commercial. I swear, these are the coolest commercials ever. If you didn’t see the first two, they are also fantastic. What makes these commercials truly great is that they are staged in the real world, not some CGI or stage-based production. It gives them a far grander feeling of scale and style.
  • The awesome specs for the HD-DVD release of Zodiac are finally announced. I can’t wait. David Fincher’s special edition releases are the only ones that come close to rivaling the likes of Ridley Scott.
  • Speaking of which, check out Bill Hunt’s review of Ridley’s mouth-wateringly awesome sounding Final Cut of Blade Runner. I can’t wait to pick up the ultimate brief-case housed HD disc set. If only the film was going to be run in the Chicago area, dang it.
  • If you missed Pushing Daisies last night (shame on you), you can catch it when it re-airs tomorrow (Friday), or online, etc. Speaking of which, the debut episode scored big in the ratings. Woo hoo! ABC has been strongly behind the show up to the launch, and this will help keep them there.
  • Uh oh. The RIAA just got a leg up. Sadly, it wasn’t from the neighborhood dog.
  • Universal takes the step that we all knew was coming with the likes of HD-DVD: in-movie shopping. The whole “interactivity” push of HD-DVD in particular is one of the most useless pieces of studio distraction in all of the HD format features. I wish they’d knock it off and pay more attention to the types of content that are actually interesting. Then again, with my recent Blu-Ray frustrations, the HD-DVD format is looking less annoying with each day.
  • 640 GB solid state drives? I want one. Or two. Or three. Or four. Or more.
  • As indifferent as I am towards Apple these days, this surely makes me feel sympathy towards the company. The fact that they have to deal with these mouth-breathers is reason enough for sympathy.
  • Could ABC really be reviving Rob Thomas’ series Cupid a decade later? If so, they’ve gotta air it after Pushing Daisies. That would be a cool time slot partnership.
  • Is McG going to direct Terminator 4? You know, a couple years ago that news would have sent me screaming into the night in fear of the final piece of crap it would have been. But it turns out the guy actually has directing talent, as was displayed recently with We Are Marshall and the brand new TV series Chuck.
  • Hmmm, a 100 GB version of the Blu-Ray disc may be in the near future. I may have a bit of a Blu-Ray rant in an upcoming posting, once I get a couple issues sorted out. I swear, these HD formats sure went out of their way to make their own industry a complete mess.
  • This cursory article gives some insight into why IE tends to be such a messed up browser.
  • Universal sure took their time following through on this, but they have finally announced season 2 of SeaQuest on DVD. While I consider season 2 to be the weakest season, at least there’s hope that they’ll make it to releasing the final third season eventually. That third season was something of an overhaul of the series, and was actually a lot better than it ever got credit for. Then again, Universal has a long and distinguished history of revamping shows and cancelling them that same year, every time.
  • Here’s one of those pictures that’s amusing for its stupidity. But when you put it in the context in which it was used, it goes WAY beyond stupidity.
  • The late Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. provides some amusing political insights in a new book compiling his journals.

Ponderings For 2007-09-03

  • OK, I’m getting things back under control. Postings will be resuming over the next few days, including a handful of overdue movie reviews (5 or so, I think). For now, lets get a ponderings posting going to kick things back off again.
  • Had one of my bi-monthly cravings for crab the other day, so I had dinner at Red Lobster (my usual haunt when the crab fixation strikes). The waiter I had was basically Jack McFarland in real life. At least, unlike the fictional McFarland, he was a good waiter. Heck, he recognized the comic I was reading as a Buffy comic, so that’s enough points in and of itself.
  • Galactica 1980 coming to DVD? Well, as horrible as the show was in general, it’ll be great to get The Return Of Starbuck.
  • Speaking of Galactica, looks like you folks that watch the show via iTunes might be having some trouble doing so in the future.
  • Also speaking of Battlestar, here’s the rather neato packaging for the HD-DVD release of season 1. It’s a nice wink to the production design within the show (the missing corners).
  • Speaking of HD-DVD, I’m now a user of both HD disc formats. I got a deal on the X-Box 360 HD-DVD drive. I don’t have a 360, but these drives work beautifully for use as a PC HD-DVD drive in either XP or Vista. Thanks to the idiocracies of HDCP, I’m using a fantastic little app called AnyDVD HD. Both my projector and my gorgeous 24″ Dell flat panel screen are not HDCP compliant, and Blu-Ray & HD-DVD won’t play back via digital connections to either. So far, AnyDVD has gotten around that for everything I’ve thrown at it. Using Cyberlink’s PowerDVD Ultra for playback. All things considered, playback is fantastic on the machine. It’s far better on XP than Vista. Heck, Vista wouldn’t let any digital audio streams out the digital output when playing things back. Works beautifully on XP, though. I must say, the HD versions on some of these discs are breathtaking. Final Fantasy is stunning on Blu-Ray. Kong is fantastic on HD-DVD. I’ve picked up a number of other discs, and have been very impressed so far.
  • Speaking of XP and Vista, I’ve downgraded my main machine at the house from Vista to XP again. This time, it’ll be a change that’ll last a while. Vista is a horrible OS for multimedia and file system performance. I’ve only been using the machine with XP for a day or two again, but man, what a breath of fresh air. The more I use Vista, the less I like the thing. I love Office 2007, but Vista is getting a bigger thumb down every month I use it. For every great change they made, they made 10 horrible ones.
  • The Google Earth flight sim. Neato.
  • Spirit & Opportunity begin to emerge from their crazy storm. Man, those little guys sure are tough little troupers.
  • Sony’s at the rootkit fun again…
  • OK, that’s enough for today to get things started again.
