Ponderings For 2008-02-21

  • Congrats to the navy for a great shoot down. No, seriously. Here’s the video. Anybody who thinks that is an easy thing has no idea.
  • Speaking of which, they are starting to see broken up pieces of the bird entering the atmo.
  • To add to the fun, the satellite shoot-down took place just as the moon was going through an infrequent lunar eclipse. I took a look at it during a few phases of the eclipse. A pic of the eclipse I took with my nifty new Canon PowerShot S5 IS camera is featured on this post. I know I could have taken a better shot, but I’m still kinda getting used to the controls on the camera, and it was frickin’ freezing out (nearly zero degrees). Still, the pic turned out pretty good for being only a partially manual shot.
  • Lunar EclipseOccasionally, The Onion will have a news story that just strikes my funny bone perfectly. This is just such a story. I was tearing up, laughing so hard while reading it.
  • Oooooh, David Fincher is directing a graphic novel adaptation, Black Hole. I’m there.
  • Then there’s word that Leonardo DiCaprio is involved in a LIVE ACTION remake of Akira. I’ve got no idea if they can even come close to making it work. I like Akira, and I’ll admit that the last act of the movie makes zero sense. I have to imagine them reworking it, somehow. But if they could somehow bring the first 30 minutes to life, with anywhere near the style that the animated film has, I’ll wanna see that.
  • More and more cast members are being added onto the roster for the Buffy Paley Center event. Now Alyson Hannigan and David Boreanaz have joined in on the fun. But hey, if Alyson is going, where’s Alexis Denisof?
  • Coolness;-)
  • Was your science fair project better than these? Too funny…
  • The HD-DVD walls continue to crumble. The major remaining HD-DVD supporting studios, Paramount and Universal, have officially jumped ship as well.
  • Help Stop Darth Weinstein. I haven’t actually seen Fanboys yet, though I’ve wanted to for some time. The reason I really want to see it just goes to underline the true nature of Fanboys in general. I want to see it because it stars Kristen Bell. Doesn’t hurt that it’s about Star Wars/fans. But yeah, this movie has had a stupid, tumultuous history trying to get to an actual release.
  • Here’s an amusing little entry in the GMail Team Blog
  • Congrats to Monk for a seventh season pickup
  • iPaper - a hopeful new attempt to kill the PDF. It’s certainly a faster platform (what isn’t?).
  • A nifty presentation of the newest version of the $5 bill (and some cool pics and info on previous versions)
  • The Sharper Image has filed for chapter 11
  • Gotta love code developers (credit for this one goes to Drupal’s always-excellent and fun Jeff Eaton)
  • Meanwhile, Juno continues on it’s steady run

David Fincher Films

I thought that in line with all the time I’ve recently spent watching the SE HD-DVD for Zodiac, I’d post one of my “top lists” for my liking of the films David Fincher has directed. I haven’t done one of the top list posts in a while, so I figured it’d be good to do another.

  1. Fight Club
  2. Zodiac
  3. The Game
  4. Se7en
  5. Panic Room
  6. Alien 3

Ponderings For 2008-01-13

  • OK, so my 2007 movie retrospective list is taking a bit longer than promised. Raise your hands, all that are surprised. Like things of this nature often do, it’s taking more time than expected.
  • One of the reasons it’s so behind schedule is actually related to it. I’ve been spending bunches of time pouring through the glorious recent HD-DVD release of the 2 disc special edition of David Fincher’s Zodiac. I’ve actually adjusted the movie up near the top of my list for the year. The more times I watch it, the more I love it. As of this evening, I’ve gone through every last bit of material on this great new special edition release. That includes both commentaries (totaling more than 5 hours) and the behind-the-scenes and factual documentaries. It’s all fantastic material. I can’t recommend the release more. And if you don’t have HD-DVD capability, you can just pick up the standard DVD special edition release. Paramount gets credit for having all but one small special feature on the HD-DVD in full HD quality (something Paramount in particular is good at doing). David Prior, who has produced previous special edition DVD releases of Fincher’s films, comes through yet again.
  • Keeping the posting brief this time. More fun to be posted soon…

Ponderings For 2007-11-20

  • Yeah, the many reviews for which I’m behind will finally start to show up over the holiday weekend. For a list of what I’ve seen that don’t yet have reviews posted, just check out the latter part of my 2007 viewing log.
  • I’m enjoying listening to Alan Silvestri’s great Beowulf score on CD (released today) as I type this. Great score (great movie, too).
  • Coolness. Director David Twohy hasn’t given up on another Riddick movie. I hope he can pull it off.
  • The interesting impact of the writer strike on the production (and completion) of Battlestar. Man, it would royally suck if the show got prematurely cut short, so very close to the planned finish line. I’m sure Ron Moore will fight tooth and nail to get it to that finish line. BTW, don’t forget that Razor airs on Saturday. I’ve already seen it in a theater last week, and it’s great. Some cool moments for classic Battlestar geeks like myself for added fun.
  • Some specs and the cool cover art are detailed for the HD-DVD release of David Fincher’s Zodiac. Given his previous special edition DVD sets for his other movies, I’m sure this release will be spectacular. Can’t wait.
  • Speaking of DVD releases, A&E has revealed some neato specs on their upcoming season 1 & 2 set for the Weird Science TV series. I was a fan of the show (still have many of them on tape from their original USA Network airings). Very cool that they got Vanessa Angel, Michael Manasseri and John Mallory Asher to all contribute in audio commentaries.
  • So, Hasselhoff might appear on the new Knight Rider remake.
  • Looks like I’ve figured what my next portable media player will be: the Cowon A3. I currently own the Cowon X5, which is an overall nice player (my battery is near dead, and I need to get around to replacing it). I’m not in a big hurry to upgrade, but that A3 sure does look awesome.
