Now here’s a movie that was a lot more fun that I was expecting. I’m a huge fan of A Knight’s Tale, which is surely my favorite film starring Heath Ledger. This film comes closer to capturing that rapid comedic timing and charm he had in A Knight’s Tale, and in a period piece as well. The production is marvelous, and the cast is clearly having way too much fun in their roles. Truly, everyone from Jeremy Irons to Oliver Platt to Lena Olin are having a blast with their roles. There are no shortages in wonderful performances. The directing, from the always-excellent Lasse Hallström, is tight and fun. Simply put, I can’t really find anything negative about this movie to comment on. For what it is, it is basically pitch perfect. It’s a fun romp that doesn’t take itself at all serious. This is clearly designed to be “entertainment” of the most direct form.
