Caprica

Ponderings For 2009-02-04

  • I post this entry from down in comfortable Phoenix, AZ (technically speaking, I'm in Laveen, which is just outside of Phoenix). It was roughly the same temp inside and out tonight. A bit wamer than the 17 degrees of Chicago, from whence I came.
  • Great to have Medium back with a new season this week. It's one of those shows where I don't realize how much I missed it until it's back. It's also a show I don't mention enough, because it really does deserve it. It's one of the most consistently great shows on the air. It's extremely rare for there to be a less-than-solid episode of the series, and it's always striving to be creative and try something risky and interesting. And it's one of those TV shows that really understands how to visually tell a story. The show's not just about visual style (which it certainly does have), but about using the visuals to help convey the plot and characters. Hopefully, the show will survive a good while longer.
  • Here's a fun new official promo from FOX for their upcoming Friday pairing of Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse, done Grindhouse style. It's a fun and cool promo (particularly for being an official promo from the network), and I really do hope these two shows can help each other survive in their crazy Friday "death slot" schedule. It all kicks off on 2/13, and I can't wait. The Whedon geek in me loves seeing Summer Glau and Eliza Dushku joining forces in different shows together.
  • Speaking of sci-fi on Friday nights, did y'all enjoy last Friday's Battlestar episode, "The Oath?" After two fantastic and gritty character episodes, this one launched things forward at a breakneck speed. Awesome episode. I cheered out loud when Starbuck, uh, made an appearance in the landing bay...
  • Speaking of Battlestar, Universal is doing an interesting move releasing the pilot for Caprica on DVD this April, LONG before it airs on Sci-Fi in 2010 along with the episodes that will follow it.
  • And just to prove that after praising the above shows so much there's the other side to the coin, here's another low for reality TV.
  • The Obama administration has made their first move that annoys me.
  • Doctor Who will be making the big jump to being fully produced for HD starting with the upcoming 2009 Specials.
  • And you thought you've stayed at some strange hotels...
  • Here's an amusing bit of subterfuge pulled off by Anna Torv and Mark Valley, stars of the series Fringe, having gotten married over the holidays without the press noticing.
  • Speaking of subterfuge, looks like you'll wanna pay close attention to those M&M's you are buying.
  • And if you wanna see something equally strange and cool, check out these hit songs reworked through Microsoft's rather interesting and impressive Songsmith platform. There's numerous other ones you can find on Youtube if you go looking, a number of which are quite interesting.

  • Caprica has been greenlit to series!!!! Woo hoo!!!!
  • Given that this is the first day of December, I've started tossing on movies for the season to watch while I mess around with stuff. I started off the series of viewings tonight with The Muppet Christmas Carol. I'll continue on with at least a few of them a week. I'll note them here as I go, and perhaps make my authoritative list of them when I'm done. For what it's worth, I did my usual viewing of Planes, Trains & Automobiles on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving.
  • To get you in the holiday spirit, here's proof that some companies really aren't greedy, evil entities. Amazing. And hey, it's even a local story.
  • Some plot details for the upcoming Tron sequel have leaked out. The bigger news is that apparently the title has been changed from TR2N to an STUPEFYINGLY awful "TRZ." I didn't think TR2N was an amazingly great title, but it worked well enough. This idiotic TRZ title has GOT to go, though. Please, somebody at Disney, swallow a brain pill and change it back, or to something else. Anything but TRZ. Seriously, this is the first sign of true stupidity involving this production. Let's stop it here and now.
  • I posted a link to a fan video for Battlestar Galactica yesterday. Here's another one by the same person. Better music this time round. Perhaps not quite as fun a video, but it still has some nice work in it, and is quite cool.
  • The mind-blowing Oasis Of The Seas has hit the water. It'll be pretty insane to see some videos of it once it hits the open seas.
  • Happy 10th anniversary to the International Space Station.
  • And happy 30th anniversary to the Star Wars Holiday Special.
  • Sometimes, cats stoop to the intelligence of dogs.
  • Here's a ray that knows how to use those wings.
  • What atheists put on their headstones.
  • Nothing to see here. Please move on.

Ponderings For 2008-07-26

  • So, longer space between posts than usual this time. I've had a fairly chaotic couple weeks, and have barely been home. So, let's cover some of the stuff from the last couple weeks.
  • With Comic-Con 2008 going on this week, there has been plenty of news. I'm not gonna attempt to comment on most of it, cause there's just too much of it. But there's one bit that I just CANNOT avoid geeking out on in a major way. Anyone who knows me knows how big of a Tron fan I am (one of my all-time favorite movies). Heck, I sit here typing this on my computer which sits right next to a Tron arcade machine. Anyway, Disney surprised the attendees at Comic-Con in a major way - a VERY cool teaser trailer. FEATURING JEFF BRIDGES, NO LESS! This sequel has been on-again off-again at Disney for many years, but it's clear seeing this promo that there's no turning back now. Despite the fact that the clip has only floated in poor quality cam recordings so far, I can't help but get goose bumps every time I watch it. Seriously, too cool for words. OK, I'm a dork...
  • In almost as big news, Ebert & Roeper And The Movies is now over, and in ending brings to close the end of an era.
  • As expected, The Dark Knight smashed records on opening weekend. And it deserves to, as it's a great film. My review for it will be posted tomorrow, btw.
  • This just in from the "I never thought I'd hear these in the same sentence department" - Darren Aronofsky is set to direct a Robocop movie.
  • SciFi has released a promo video for Caprica
  • Can't Hardly Wait is coming to Blu-Ray. I'm a fan of the film, and think it's something of an overlooked comedy gem. Now Sony, could we please have the original cut of the film on this disc, from before it got cut down for the rating? (restoring Amber Benson's drunk character, etc)
  • Here's a fun Worth1000.com Star Wars photoshop contest
  • Looks like us fans will soon get our grubby little paws on a lot of material by the late, legendary Delia Derbyshire (of the fantastic BBC Radiophonic Workshop, who was the key person behind the sound of the Doctor Who theme).
  • The hilarity of suicide
  • Could it be? Actual season sets of Spin City on DVD? And from a quality producer like Shout Factory? One can hope.
  • While I still have my doubts about anyone ever adapting The Prisoner successfully, I'll be intrigued to see the results.
  • In anticipation of seeing the new X-Files movie (for which I will post a review tomorrow), I've been watching my favorite couple dozen episodes of the series over the last couple months. While watching the episode titled The Goldberg Variation, which is one of the great 7th season episodes from 1999, I was suddenly struck by the realization that the actor playing the little kid in the episode was Shia LaBeouf. Sure enough, when I looked it up, I was right. Given how young he is in the episode, it's actually a little tough to see the similarity. It was in the delivery of the dialog that I noticed it was him.
  • Sadly, I've seen similar shipping stupidities on the part of large companies before.
  • I have no response to that
  • Eh, that'll do for now. There's plenty more that I need to roll into the post, but I'll try and do another one tomorrow with more. Too much time between posts, dang it.
