Ponderings For 2007-02-12
- New fan site for the upcoming Fox series Drive debuts (including some links to promo videos, etc). I’m very anxiously looking forward to this Tim Minear series, which kicks off April 15.
- Speaking of which, that fan site has a link to a nice interview with Tim Minear about the show. Worth checking out.
- Cool, the TV series Kidnapped has just gotten a DVD release announcement. It was actually a good show that got cut down pretty quickly after it started this season. It was one of 2 kidnap shows to launch this season (and die quickly). The other one was Vanished, which definitely wasn’t as good as Kidnapped. Do check out the DVD release for Kidnapped when it’s released. I’ll be happy to see the unaired episodes…
- This must be what the third pig built his house out of…
- Coming as a shock to exactly nobody, Transmeta officially exits the CPU business (so long, Cyrix!)
- You know, while I wait on the sidelines for the tech companies to get their collective HD act together, I sit here at the moment watching the Madonna Confessions Tour concert DVD on my InFocus X1 front projector (on my 9 foot horizontal screen), amazed at how good it looks considering the budget equipment I’m running it on. I’ve had the X1 for just about 3 years now (and it’s been succeeded by no less than 3 newer models by now). It was a bargain at $900 back then, and it’s still a great projector for the price (and can be found nowadays for as little as $550 - not much more than the $300 replacement lamp cost). Yeah, it’s only an 800×600 resolution projector, but it does a bang-up job on DVD video content, and does a pretty good job in my low light level basement where I have it. Combined with the Onkyo THX/DTS-ES sound on my beloved Definitive BP-2000 series speakers (that I’ve had for 10 years, which are still the most expensive thing I’ve ever bought that wasn’t a house or car, that are still as amazing as the day I got them), it’s actually a remarkably threatrical experience. So, I’m in no major hurry to go HD as yet. I’ll just sit back and wait for Blu-Ray to win out (my current prediction - which could easily be wrong). I’ll still be hard pressed to switch over, as neither my projector nor my 24″ Dell LCD panel that runs at 1920×1200 resolution can support HDCP. Not having HDCP idiocies is reason enough for me to just stick with DVD. This concert DVD is stunningly master, btw. It’s also amazingly directed, shot & edited. Great demo material. For the record, I’m not a huge Madonna fan, but her 1999 Ray Of Light CD is one of my favorite non-film score CD’s ever, and her most recent Confessions On A Dance Floor CD is also quite good.
Dialog Of The Day: “Makes Ben Hur look like an Epic!” (OK, technically a tag-line, for Monty Python & The Holy Grail)
Video Of The Day: A very cool little presentation - Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us
